Casa Lacus is a new spot taking shape on Kuthirakoor Kari, a little-known peninsula near Palluruthy, set within the tranquil backwaters of Vembanad Kayal.Surrounded by water on three sides and fertile wetlands on the fourth, this land has always lived by the rhythms of water, long before it became a place to stay.Today, Casa Lacus begins its story the same way the land always has: with paddling, mangrove, aquaculture, and respect for the ecosystem.
THE LAND
A legacy shaped by water and way of lifeKuthirakoor Kari carries a layered history shaped by cultivation, water management, and local knowledge.Once under the stewardship of Elamana Madom, the land supplied fodder for the horses of feudal families, and later the Kochi royal household and British forces. The name itself reflects this past - “kuthira ooru”, the land of horses, and “kari”, a reference to the region’s distinctive dark, peaty soil.THE PRESENT
A return to water-led living
Casa Lacus marks a new chapter - one that builds on the land’s legacy rather than replacing it.The project begins with:
Paddling-based exploration of the surrounding backwaters
Mangrove-friendly aquaculture, including shrimp and fish farming
A working landscape that supports biodiversity and local livelihoods
This is not a themed experience.
It is the land doing what it has always done — adapted for today.

Paddle the Backwaters
See the backwaters as they are
The backwaters are best experienced at water level, without engines or noise. At Casa Lacus, paddling is the primary way to move through the landscape.
Walk the Mangroves
The mangroves are best explored on foot. Guided walks along bunds and forested edges reveal how these ecosystems protect water, sustain shrimp and fish, and shelter birds, crabs, and other wildlife. Close enough to observe, far enough to leave them undisturbed.
Fish & Learn the Waters
Discover the traditional practices that have shaped Kuthirakoor Kari for generations. Participate in handline fishing, net casting, and observe seasonal shrimp and fish farming — all designed to show aquaculture in harmony with the mangroves.
Gather by the Lake
Casa Lacus is designed for meaningful gatherings, not crowds. Families, friends, or small retreat groups can meet by the water, share meals, and enjoy quiet evenings around a fire or open-air spaces. Conversation flows as naturally as the backwaters themselves.
Farm-to-Table Experiences (Coming Soon)
Taste the backwaters you’ve explored. Seasonal shrimp, fish, and local produce are brought from water and land to the table. Guests can witness, and sometimes participate in, simple preparation - connecting meals to the ecosystem that sustains them.
